SCHOOLS in our region proved they are top of the class at a ceremony which celebrated excellence in education.

The fourth North East School Awards were staged on Thursday at the Centre for Life in Newcastle.

The popular awards aim to praise the unsung heroes in our classrooms as well as showcase the fantastic work taking place in our schools every day.

The event is run by the Evening Gazette in association with our sister paper the Journal, based on Tyneside, and our main sponsors, Northumbrian Water.

Ten category awards were Burberry Replica Handbags presented in total; five for individuals and five for school projects.

Angela Barry from Caldicotes Primary School in Middlesbrough won the Support Staff of the Year category.

Miss Barry said: "I only found out about the awards three weeks ago. It was such a shock to hear I'd been nominated.

"I couldn't believe it when they called my name out. It is a real honour."

The Headteacher of the Year award went to Dean Judson from Hurworth School, near Darlington.

He said: "This award isn't just for me, but the whole staff team and the school. I was delighted Prada Replica Handbags to be shortlisted and absolutely gobsmacked when I found out I'd won."

The Active Community Award went to The King's Academy, on Stainton Way, Middlesbrough.

Finalists in the project categories -which were Change4Life, Healthy School, Sustainable School, Active Community and School Newspaper -gave short presentations to the audience. These were creative and entertaining, ranging from poems to rap songs.

The Change4Life category, sponsored by Public Health North East, is a new award for 2010 and this went to Pallister Park Primary School in Middlesbrough, who also received pounds 1,000 prize money.

Headteacher Chris said: "It's the icing on a very healthy cake because we have won so much this year. Things just keep on getting better and better.

"I'm just so proud of the children, staff and parents as it's such an accolade and we've had such good competition."

The awards were presented by Karen Wright and Steve Furnell from Galaxy North East Radio.

A 16-page supplement showing the highlights of the ceremony, including pictures of all the winners, will be in next Tuesday's Evening Gazette.
